Saira & June’s kitchen journal

Good things happen around this table.

We are Saira and June, and this is our household notebook from Bristol. It began with a loose collection of meal ideas tucked behind a flour tin. Now it also holds the weekend walks, crooked sewing projects, and small family rituals that might otherwise disappear between one busy week and the next.

Our kitchen is narrow enough that opening the oven requires a brief negotiation. The table, however, is generous. It has room for a pan of roasted vegetables, a half-finished puzzle, and the person who has arrived early and needs somewhere to sit. We measure a successful meal partly by how long people stay afterwards.

Saira writes most of the food notes and notices when a familiar recipe becomes easier. June records the walks and usually remembers the thing everyone else forgot to bring. We both edit with a pencil, which explains the contradictory instructions in some of our older notebooks. The finished pages here keep the useful discoveries.

This is not a polished account of perfect family life. It is a place to preserve the ordinary things that worked: a soup improved by a spoonful of lemon, a rainy afternoon rescued by paper and scissors, or a plan simple enough that we actually left the house. The weekend pages start with one of those modest successes.
